Are we there yet?

Categorized under: why is it doing that?  Remember that story back in 2002 where a coyote hopped on a commuter train in Portland?  Now they’re evolving! Growing and adapting to their new environs.

PORTLAND, OR — Authorities reported on Wednesday that a wild coyote was chased off the tarmac at Portland International Airport. The traveling prairie pooch, realizing that it wasn’t welcome to fly the friendly skies, proceeded to the Tri-Met Airport Terminal Station where it boarded the light-rail train bound for downtown.

After being refused airport service, traveling canine "Wiley" decided to take the Red Line train bound for downtown Portland.

The big bad coyote…er a make that a coywolf?  Coyotes and wolves, are mixing it up in the Eastern US–hybridizing themselves into a new species–punctuated evolution style.  “Word up dog!”

…mixing of coyote and wolf genes allowed the animal to rapidly evolve larger, more powerful jaws, better adapted to preying on whitetail deer.

Gore’s Mole Hole

Dr F, thought what he had, was a pretty good idea, in this blog entry, but the bloom is somewhat off the rose, as they say. NBC in their infinite wisdom, probably at the bequest of their lawyers, pulled the Al Gore interview off YouTube. Add to that, Conan’s sudden departure from the late-night television stage and well, as I said the bloom is off the rose.    

In his recent  appearance on ‘The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien,’ our ex. VP, made some scientifically ludicrous and very naïve statements about the Earth’s core and energy production, which his detractors, mined for gold.   Frankensteam, too, believed there was mileage in this material, but for now the threads that I/he am/is/was/were following, seem to have come unraveled.  

Al Gore on Conan O’Brien’s show the other day:  

Conan: Now, what about … you talk in the book about geothermal energy …  

Al: Yeah, yeah.  

Conan: and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that’s generated from the core of the earth …  

Al: Yeah.  

Conan: … to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?  

Al: It definitely is, and it’s a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy — when they think about it at all — in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, ’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …  

Now, if the learned ex-VPOTUS, had just said–thousands of degrees…  

The fact is, deep geo-thermal, does have historical president (no pun intended), as the below links to ‘The Deepest Hole,’ prove. Both the defunct Soviet Union, and the Western Block scientific communities, were actively involved in research into this futuristic technology, and dear children, they still are!   

All the links with the exception of the ‘goddess Gaia and Al Gore is her prophet,’ still work, and more my follow, but for now, this has turned into a dry hole.  Sorry Charlie.

Speeking of which, why did the Russians… er-ah, Soviet Union, ex-of, try ta dig a hole to the center of the Earth, and what did they find there?

2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season

After last years Gustav and Ike, the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season may just go down in the record books as one of the quietest tropical seasons, ever.

…the El Niño that formed earlier this year has “really, really dampened hurricane activity” in general in the western Atlantic…We probably will see more storms…But I don’t believe we’ll see the [intense] late-season activity that we’ve seen during the past 10 or 15 years.

Summer From Hell Freezes Over

The supposed “global cooling” consensus among scientists in the 1970s — frequently offered by global-warming skeptics as proof that climatologists can’t make up their minds — is a myth, according to a survey of the scientific literature of the era

“I was surprised that global warming was so dominant in the peer-reviewed literature of the time,” (1970’s) says Peterson, who was also a contributor to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 report.

Scandal in academia — yet evidence still compelling for climate change.

Graphic images that reveal the devastating impact of global warming in the Arctic have been released by the US military. The photographs, taken by spy satellites over the past decade, confirm that in recent years vast areas in high latitudes have lost their ice cover in summer months.

Arctic sea ice, was believed to be experiencing a recovery of late based on satellite data, but sea surface observations, by researcher’s using ice breaker ships, revealed multiyear ice to be much thinner than climatologists thought.   

…ice conditions are even worse than feared after a survey found that ice detected as older and thicker by satellites is actually thin and fragile.

The loss of sea-ice habitat is considered the greatest threat to polar bear populations. 2008 Summer melting was equal in size to the states of Alaska, Texas and Washington combined — a shrinkage not predicted to happen until 2040.

Experts shocked by findings…

…ice is unable to withstand battering waves and storms because global warming is rapidly melting it…

The sea ice findings, will be published in the peer-reviewed journal, Geophysical Research Letters.

Hopefully, these ‘letters‘ are not the same ones hacked from the University of East Anglia, Climatic Research Unit, currently muddy the waters in the debate on how to deal with the challenges facing civilization in the face of sudden climate change.

As if it were ripped straight from the front page of a supermarket tabloid, this morning’s satellite image shows what we’ve all been thinking:  namely, there must be some exceptional reason it’s so damn hot in Texas and now we know. Demons! The fiery-hot breath of flaming demons, stoke “The Summer from Hell, ” roasting Texans in their own juices.

Solar Cycle 24 Begins–Again?

After a bang-up start to ss24 in November of 2009, the Sun, again entered a quiescent period, devoid of sunspots–until January 15 or there about, when an M class flare disrupted terrestrial radio reception, creating spectacular auroral light shows in Earth’s polar regions.    

Last week, the sunspot’s magnetic field erupted five times, producing a string of M-class solar flares that marked the strongest spate of solar activity in nearly two years. Although it has since calmed, the [maelström] could erupt again at any time.

Got off to a good start but has ‘petered out,’ so ta speak. A check of spaceweather.com, as of Monday, November 30th 2009, reveals sunspot activity has again returned to zero.    

The sun is blank–no sunspots.

The new solar cycle has began with a bang. A cluster of sunspots 60 to 80 times the size of the Earth have emerged on the far side of the Sun signaling the beginning of what astronomers refer to as, “Solar Cycle 24.” This newest sunspot is thought to be 60 to 80 times the size of Earth and shaped like the letter “S”. The last major sunspot activity happened over two years ago and produced the most powerful x-class flare yet –measuring x28. …and then all went quiet as far as solar storms go. pictured above: A typical sunspot compared to the size of the Earth.     

     

Sunspots have all but vanished in recent years sparking vigorous debate in the scientific community as to the effect reduced solar output would have on the Earth’s climate. Some even speculated a global cooling was in the works if solar activity didn’t pick up soon.

 Global climate change is upon us…No one ever thought a black man would (really) become president of the United States…at least it was said…if or when and until pigs fly…now we have Swine Flu. No one ever expected frost in July, but it is Canada were talki’ about, after all.      

Temperatures dropped to a record low in Prince Edward Island overnight Tuesday, with reports of frost throughout the province.  An official record low of 3.8 C was set early Wednesday morning at Charlottetownairport. The previous record for that date was 5.1 C, set in 2005.  Bob Robichaud, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said that to his knowledge, frost has never been reported before in July in P.E.I.  “That 3.8 we got last night kind of sticks out as being lower than some of the other records for anytime in early July,” Robichaud told CBC News on Wednesday.  “So we’re looking at a significant event,” he said.     

Summer from Hell continues… Mean-whiles, deep in the heart of Texas, temperatures soar to record breaking levels as air conditioners drone on trying to keep southerners perspiration free. Meteorologist, Burton Fitzsimmons sums it up for us in his daily post.    

 Yesterday’s hottest included a record 106 at Austin-Mabry and 105 at Austin-Bergstrom, while Waco posted 102. The peak Wednesday heat index: 113 at Fort Hood. Yikes! Today’s records to beat: 105 Mabry, 102 Bergstrom, 104 Waco.         

 I‘ll be darned!         

Doc. F, awoke to cries and moaning — out I go at 3 am — squeezin’ oil into our old window unit, in a vain attempt ta keep it alive, for just one more Summer. We’ll see what mañana brings… same ol’ same ol’, I’ll bet.

FrankenSteam’s 10 year old AC, has gone to it’s reward. The ‘Summer from Hell,’ was just too much for it;  the bearings froze up, and as my old pappy used ta say: That’s all she wrote.        

At this rate, Canada doesn’t sound so bad.

Currently, awaiting ‘Solar Cycle 24’ to begin. So far, all we have is a clean disk –no sunspots.         

…the sun went through a period of sunspot ‘inactivity’ [emphasis added] from about 1645 to 1715. This period of sunspot minima is called the Maunder Minimum…The “Little Ice Age” occurred…during the Maunder Minimum. So the question remains, do solar minimums help to create periods of cooler than normal weather, and do solar maximums help to cause drought[s]…?       

The Maunder Minimum coincided with the middle — and coldest part — of the Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America, and perhaps much of the rest of the world, were subjected to bitterly cold winters. Whether there is a causal connection between low sunspot activity and cold winters is the subject of ongoing debate (e.g., see Global Warming).
