As if it were ripped straight from the front page of a supermarket tabloid, this morning’s satellite image shows what we’ve all been thinking: namely, there must be some exceptional reason it’s so damn hot in Texas and now we know. Demons! The fiery-hot breath of flaming demons, stoke “The Summer from Hell, ” roasting Texans in their own juices.

Hottest 30 Days in Austin Weather History!
“THE 30 DAY PERIOD FROM JUNE 15 TO JULY 14 AND AGAIN JUNE 16 TO JULY 15 THIS YEAR IS SO FAR THE WARMEST 30 DAY PERIOD OF RECORD AT AUSTIN MABRY SINCE 1898 AND AT SAN ANTONIO SINCE 1885.” — National Weather Service

hard to believe it’s worse than here in S.C., but I think I do
Ok … just have to say.

Had me laughing out loud
It’s bad. The heat hangs in the still air like some languid plague, it stays in the 90s into the late evening.

Nice post btw, I like the water vapor map.
Thanks fer the ‘outlook’ link. That’s one I didn’t know about.
Wow that’s hot!
Die,Texas,Die!
hooray for ignorance.
Now now…
Oh, please.
If it were so unbelievably unpleasant here, all the folks moving from the “pleasant” environs (bankrupt California comes to mind) wouldn’t be moving here.
What most folks forget is that just as the northern climates have terrific heating technologies to cope with their frigid winters, we have awesome air-conditioning in the south.
Oh, and guns. Lots of guns. (that’s to scare you away – traffic’s getting bad enough)
Piss off, foreigner, piss off..
Are you drinkin,’ again?
Are you telling me this wasnt photo shopped?
I swear by the Goddess of Photoshop –completely un-adulterated– fresh from the Internet tubes gahmmer.
Dang, that is wild. But at least you guys HAVE some heat! It’s been cool and rainy here the entire spring/summer, and I’m tired of it. Wish it would warm up!!!!!!!!!! Think I’m kidding….its yet to hit 80 here!!!!!!!
P.S…..Btw…..has anyone besides me noticed how weird the weather pattern has been for a while now? Most of the time the weather arrives south to north (southern CA to Maine), yet this year the weather pattern is north to south. Wonder if this has anything to do with our cool/rainy weather (and if so I want rid of it…jeez). And I forgot to say that I’m in eastern TN if your wondering.
The thinking is: the El Nino/La Nina oscillation is the root cause of the current weather patern seen in the US.
I submit this “lite” reading to ponder.
“In the case of El Niño, one theory is that these events are the means by which heat is drained from the equatorial oceans after a period of accumulation. Such a theory predicts that by observing the growth of heat content, it should be possible to forecast when an El Niño will occur. That seems to be at least partly true, but it was contradicted by the El Niño of 1993, which occurred immediately after one the previous year, and no accumulation had occurred. Another theory argues that El Niños are triggered by random events occurring in other parts of the climate system, and suggests that we will never be able to predict them. Some scientists argue for an opposite (cold) phase called La Niña, and see the whole thing as an oscillation swinging back and forth, while others think there is just the normal situation disturbed by occasional El Niños. However, you can see that despite the existence of competing theories for El Niño, there is no doubt that it is a real, factual occurrence.” –NOAA, El Nino FAQS

The heat in central Texas has been horrible. Around 1 Oclock every one disappears into there homes or offices to escape the the sweltering heat. Utility bills are going to skyrocket in the next few months. Water rationing is already in place. June and July are the bareable months, August is always the worst. We have been in August for two months now. I’m afraid of what the real August and September months will have in store for central Texas.
I’m with you there man. Greetings from San Marcos, Texas aka the seventh level of Hell. Why have the rain gods deserted us? My front yard looks like the African plains right now, and we only had to mow once this year!

Really, untouched. I swear.
Hey, I know you guys are hotter than Hell down there now but feel sorry for us on the mideast. We are having one of the coolest summers ever. I do like it hot and humid. I think that in my former life I was a plant. LOL!!! If you send us a little heat, we will send you a little coolness in exchange.

Greetings from Austin, TX. It’s Hot! But I think it’s the other end of the demon blowin’ on us!
I dunno. It looks more like a cross with someone hanging from it to me. Perhaps someone else is pissed at Texas?
I’m right there withyou, roasting (more like stewing) in the SC heat. Just think, August is right around the corner.

Yeah, its pretty freakin hot out here. And it is only going to get worse. Come on down to Houston, ladies and gentlemen. This is one of the few places where the humidity is higher then some countries Gross National Product.
Guess I’ll just STFU about Mississippi too.
Actually, it hasn’t been near that bad. Just a few days of triple digits with the forecast in the lower 90s next week. I may put on a jacket.
Thanks For this article.
Oh it is… It was 107 the other day in North Dallas where I live.
Good news is there is a cold front scheduled to come in this weekend, should bring us down to 98….
It’s a little bit hot here in Dallas. We got spoiled by a balmy summer in ’08.
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. I cannot remember a Summer that has been as tortuous as this one. Here in Austin, we usually have triple digit temperatures in August and occasionally they will hit us in July. This is unprecedented. Almost every day for the last four weeks has hit 100+. I am going to try and hang tough for one more year but if this repeats next Summer, I’m out of here for a more moderate climate.
It really us a record breaking year for both heat and exceptional drought.
“If you have been thinking this summer has been way too hot, you’re right. The average temperature at Camp Mabry from June 15 to July 14 AND from June 16 to July 15 was 89.5 degrees. These are the two warmest 30-day periods on record ever at Camp Mabry.” (Austin, Texas)
— Burton Fitzsimons

And that’s exactly how it feels here in Houston. You break a sweat looking outside.
Lol, like they don’t deserve it anyhow.
Why? Because of Dubya, Cornyn, Perry and Rove?
Trust me, its freaking hot. I live in southern Oklahoma about 30 min from the Texas border. We had four to five days of 106 degree temps in a row. And my house faces west, cardboard and tin foil are a must.
…I know you don’t mean –a cardboard and tin foil hat!?!
“And my house faces west, cardboard and tin foil are a must.”
Keeps the demons out, obviously.
…and Mexico, but who cares about them, right?
@Sid Pena
Oh, it’s been worse. Google the heat wave of 1980, and of 2006. In 2006 I don’t remember it feeling as bad, but I do remember every bit of vegetation when flying over the state was brown (and in areas it shouldn’t be like HOU to DAL). I vaguely remember the heat wave of 1980 because every day you’d find a road with a new heat induced road buckle. That took years for the city of HOU to fix most of the roads.
To all non-Texans: it’s always like this – hot, hot, hot and dry, dry, dry. The weather is miserable just about year-round. The food is terrible and the cities are crowded. There is no culture and the economy is horrible.
Please don’t move here. Stay in your native state or country, where I am sure you are loved and adored by everyone and where the winds of fortune blow upon you every morning and night.
106 for 4 days in a row, 3 weeks ago..heat index was at 110.
Its not even August yet…
Nobody likes texas anyway
i’m in swest texas on the frio river and that photo looks bad! but better than 3 or 4 ft. of snow in a few months!!!!!!!!!!!

/sarcasm
I’m from Round Rock.. so I know how humid it can get, but after living in Phoenix for college and experiencing the summers out there, I can only laugh at 90 degree weather.
Deatheaters!
This week the LOW here in Dallas (North Texas, not the hottest area by any means) was 89-90 degrees sometime around 4AM in the morning a few nights.

Ouch!
Doesn’t Bush live in Texas these days? 😛
Dallas. Throw yer shoes at ’em.
The reason is that we have returned to the dreaded El Nino weather pattern which baked us for much of the ’90s. But as far as unprecedented – you need to be at least in your mid-30s or older to remember the summer of 1980.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980_United_States_heat_wave
Oh, I remember. I drove a truck all thru Summer of ’79, without air conditioning –my first full Summer spent in Austin. It rained 20 outta 30 days! The ‘heat spell’ of ’80 was only broken by Hurricane Allen which produced the one and only tornado, I’ve ever seen with my own eyes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Allen
Boo Hoo! You’re all a bunch of whiny babies. Oh, it’s 107, omg, demon breath. It’s routinely 110 in Phoenix and you don’t hear us all complaining about it. Go jump in your pool and shut up. Just be thankful you don’t live in Mexico.
Much of the time, the Summer weather in Central Texas, comes from the Chihuahuan Desert region and the Eastern Pacific.
…but when you say Mexico, I think of…
“…climate of Mexico varies according to altitude. The low-lying coastal areas are typically tropical, hot and humid, but the weather in Mexico City, which is sited at an altitude of 2,300 metres above sea level, is far more moderate. Mexico City has pleasant summers and mild winters, with an annual average temperature of 64 °F…Seasonal variations in temperature are small, but May is the warmest month of the year, and January the coldest, when night frosts are possible. Mexico City has a high average annual rainfall, most falling in summer, the wettest month being July, and the driest month February.”
http://www.wordtravels.com/Cities/Mexico/Mexico+City/Climate
…sounds pretty nice, to me.
The perceived difference in temperature between Arizona and Texas is humidity, and I assure you that 110 in Az is NOTHING like 110 in Houston or Austin I have been in all three places at temperature). NO CONTEST there KG. When evaporative cooling is basically shut down because the sweat goes nowhere, the index is what you experience- dragons breath.
…you tell’em, Monty!
Perhaps it’s God’s revenge for all those State Executions. Just sayin’!
God isn’t punishing TX for executions. God said obey the laws of your leaders and your country. If [you] break them, then you must go away so that you are not tempted to repeat the crime. As far as I am concerned there aren’t enough executions.
As for the heat, this to shall pass. It is Texas… if you don’t like the heat go somewhere else. Cool map picture!

And according to most Texans there is no such thing as climate change. I was born and raised in Texas and the summer’s are getting hotter as are the winters. Having grown up 200 miles south of Amarillo winter temps here averaged in the mid forties with occasional days in the 70s not so anymore. I moved back here from No California nine years ago and have yet to see a genuine West Texas winter. Let’s call it what it is man is about to find out you can’t just do whatever you want to the environment and get good results. Remember the old commercial? “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”
…and now, she’s pissed!
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

You have been fooled by the same ignorant liberals who told us to fear the global cooling back in the ’70s.
The weather patterns are changing, its true, but overall the globe is on a cooling trend (do a little research instead of listening to Al “The Whore Gore”). Gore and the rest of the extrmemist[SP] liberal/socialists that are taking over our government)
Temp[erature] graphs show that the earth has been warming and cooling on a predicatable curve for millions of years. These graphs also show times when co2 was very high but temps were lowering.
You have been duped!
Obama and his extremist liberal lackeys, don’t care about “you minorities,” the Earth or our economy. [What]they really care about[is] taking power and “KEEPING” power. They have lied to the American people and smear[ed] anyone who disagrees. It is pretty obvious that the election of Obama help[d] them use race as another way to stop anyone from disagreeing. So, like always, liberals and democrats use minorities –they don’t help them (or they [might]lose their voting base).
Sorry to be so long winded, but it appeared you needed education.
I don’t know where you’re gettin’ your information from — I hope it’s not from Rush Limbaugh or Pat Robertson.
Sailor: “…overall the globe is on a cooling trend…” –your words.
Show me one peer reviewed, scientific paper, that shows average global mean temperature is dropping, over a period of say –150 years and I’ll eat my hat. I’ll just say this about that: In the last thirty years, the scale is off the charts to the hotter’n Hell side.

In your defense
It is noteworthy that all paleo-climatologists agree that at the high and low end of the recurring 100,000 year cycles in which global mean temperature moves as much as 20 degrees, it is temperature that changes direction first, followed in a few hundred years by carbon dioxide concentration. These cycles of temperature are perfectly correlated with the oscillation of the earth’s orbit around the sun from a circle to a 5 percent ellipse, although no convincing mechanism has been identified for how the change in the orbit could significantly change the solar power that gets to earth.

On the other hand
Global climate models coupling the atmosphere and the oceans do replicate well [with] certain climate changes, in particular changes in temperature observed over the last century and the last few decades, if the following observed variants are incorporated…:
greenhouse gas concentrations,
stratospheric ozone,
aerosols in the troposphere,
aerosols in the stratosphere, and
solar activity (sunspots).
The first three of these are largely due to activities of mankind, the last two are natural. The application of statistical tests to temperature measurements during this century lead to the conclusion that the warming is man-made with a confidence of 99%…The global mean temperature trend between 1975-1997, and even regional variations in this trend, can be explained very well by observed changes in greenhouse-gas concentrations…in other words greenhouse gas emissions are by far the leading cause of climate change during the last quarter of the 20th century. The last decade of the 20th century (especially the years 1990, 1993 and 1997) is almost certainly the warmest since 1400…
–E. Linacre and B. Geerts
http://www-das.uwyo.edu/~geerts/cwx/notes/chap06/clim_expl.html
The global mean temperature over the last 137 years…shows two periods of rapid warming: between 1915-1942, and between 1974-1998. ..a rise of about 0.6 K since 1910 and no trend between 1940-75. Observe the rapid rise from 1975 to 1995: global mean temperature anomalies in the last decade were about 0.5 K, several times larger than the interannual variation. The 20th century temperature trend is largely explained by observed changes in greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations in the atmosphere.

– Survivor in San Antonio
I grew up in San Antonio and lived for the Summer –we were always outside. ‘Course, my Dad sold air conditioners. I’m sure that skewed my perception of the heat.
BTW It was my Grandfather who sold the first window air conditioning unit in SA (according to local legend).
I just moved to Atlanta and everyone thinks it is so hot here but it feels wonderful to me because I lived in Houston for 2 years and 7 months and left July 2, 2009 so I got a good taste of the hotter than “H” “E” double hockey stick heat this year. 🙂

Yep. In Dallas. Send ’em your shoes.
In Central Texas, June ’09 was the second hottest June in history; second only to June ’08. I went to Alaska for the first 2 weeks of July, to escape the heat and it was 87 in Denali the day we were there.
Good man, I support this post ^_^…V

North East is enjoying the coolest summer in decades.
So far in PA we had no 90+ degree days this summer. It stays around 80 most of the time and nights are around 60.
Winter was the longest in decades as well. We had frost warnings all the way to mid May. So to those who think Texas heat is due to AGW, it’s all just weather. It oscillates- that much has been known for long time.
…but this is different!

Can you elaborate? From this picture, Wisconsin looks to be a alot worse than Texas. I guess I’m not following.
Besides, I’m in Phoenix right now and it’s 103 at this very moment. It’s 9am. Are you saying it’s hotter in Texas? It’ll be 115 by 3pm today.

It has been 100 + for the last 20-25 days here in San Antonio. The heat is a little early this year but I suspect that mid august thru september will bring massive rains/floods and the like. I personally like the heat. You wimps up north…stay there we don’t want ya here…our economy is great…the beer is cold and the women are hot. Don’t mess with Texas!
sailor “I suspect that mid august thru september will bring massive rains/floods and the like.”
What makes you say that, Captin’ Gus? You know somethin’ we don’t? The long range forecast shows higher than average rainfall for the later half of ’09 and into next Winter. The return of “El Nino.” Perhaps?
